Drogba retires from international football

Ivory Coast star Didier Drogba on Friday said he was to retire from international football after earning 104 caps and scoring 65 goals throughout his career.

Drogba, 36, released a statement on his website saying he was "proud to have captained this team for eight years and to have contributed to putting my country on the world stage."

The World Cup in Brazil this summer was the striker's third but like the events in 2006 and 2010 ended in disappointment as the Ivory Coast were knocked out at the group stage.

Drogba returned to Chelsea this close season from Turkish club
Galatasaray.
